Ombre Hair Update

Well, as you can see the Splat hair colour has faded horribly. I have to be honest, the stuff is a nightmare, at least the Lusty Lavender colour I used is. Every time my hair got wet, even in the rain, the dye ran out of it. It continued to fade constantly and I followed the instruction that said this colour would last much longer than it has. In my opinion Splat hair colour is a waste of money. It is awful to work with and doesn't last.

Luckily, my son's friend Jesalynn bought me other purple hair dye, that I had kept to replenish this look after it had faded. I just wasn't expecting to have to use it so soon. She bought me Manic Panic in Electric Amethyst! What difference in hair colouring! Compared to Splat this Manic Panic is a joy to work with. It went on nicely and the end resulting colour is far superior!

I think I should have applied more of the dye to my hair, but I'm a cheapskate and wanted to get more than use out of the dye. ;-) Manic Panic wasn't as thin and runny as the Splat was when applying it, so that was much nicer to work with. The colour I ended up with was actually purple, not a bright pink as it had been with the Splat. I have also found the Manic Panic doesn't run every time it gets wet either.
So, if you are looking to dye your hair a funky colour, I would personally recommend using the Manic Panic rather than the Splat.

Coconut Raspberry Squares

These squares are very sweet and crumbly. You may want to let them set after they bake before you cut them. They seemed to hold together better after being refrigerated overnight.

Coconut Raspberry Squares

1 cup  flour
1/2 cup  butter
1 tablespoon milk
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 egg
1/2  cup raspberry jam
1 cup sugar
1 egg
2 cups coconut
2 tablespoons melted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla

Combine the flour, first amount of butter, milk, baking powder and first egg in a mixing bowl. Spread this mixture evenly into a greased 9"x9" pan. 

Spread the raspberry jam over the mixture in the pan.

In a mixing bowl, beat the sugar and second egg until frothy. Add coconut, melted butter and vanilla in the bowl and beat together well. Spread this coconut mixture over the layer of raspberry jam. 

Bake at 350F for 30-40 minutes until golden brown. 

These tend to stick to the sides of the pan a wee bit, so you might want to cut them away from the sides fairly soon after baking, by running a knife along the edges to separate them. If you find they are too sweet you can always cut the amount of sugar you use down by 1/2 and it won't affect the recipe. Happy baking!

These Brownies are delicious and make quite a few. You can leave the walnuts out if you want.


1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter or margarine
1 cup cocoa
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1 cup chopped walnuts

In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.

Melt the butter in medium sized saucepan. When the butter is thoroughly melted remove from heat. Blend in the cocoa. Add in the sugar, eggs and vanilla mixing well. Pour in the dry ingredients and nuts and mix thoroughly.

Pour the batter into a greased 13x9 inch pan. Bake at 350F for 30 or 35 minutes. Let cool when done.
